BIOTRANSFORM PUBLICATIONS

The BIOTRANSFORM project has published two scientific contributions via Zenodo, advancing its mission to promote circularity in bioeconomy transitions across Europe:

  1. Towards Sustainable Circular Bioeconomy: A Comprehensive Assessment Framework for Evaluating Viability in European Union’s Regions - European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) 2024

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15745556

This paper introduces an integrated assessment framework to support regional-level decision-making in the shift from fossil-based to bio-based economies. The framework brings together three complementary tools:

  • Resource Flow Analysis (RFA)
  • Logistic Optimization (MooV)
  • Impact Assessment Tool (IAT)

Applied across six case study regions (Andalusia, North Rhine-Westphalia, Czech Republic, Greece, Austria, and Finland), the approach helps identify optimal biomass-based transition pathways. An illustrative case from Northern Burgenland, Austria, examines the straw value chain, showing how environmental outcomes are highly dependent on regional context, technological options, and local constraints. The study highlights that tailored, region-specific strategies are essential to reliably achieve sustainability benefits.

  1. Green transition of forest industry in Finland - Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference (NWBC) 2024

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15745491

This publication presents the BIOTRANSFORM case study on Finland’s forest industry. Working with local stakeholders, the research team explores how lignin valorisation from side streams (rather than using them for low-value energy) can help shift the sector toward circular, high-value products.

Using a life-cycle thinking–based assessment framework, the environmental and socio-economic impacts of proposed pathways are evaluated, and recommendations for the most promising transition trajectories are provided.
